Donating a Puppy

Independence Dogs is always looking for recruits for its nationally recognized service dog school. Specifically, we’re looking for dogs who are:

  • Young:    7 weeks through 1-1/2 years old
  • Large:    For example, a German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Rottweiler, Greyhound, or any large mixed-breed
  • Friendly:     Outgoing and sociable; they like to play and aren’t afraid of people or dogs
  • Even-tempered:    "Mellow"--showing no signs of aggression toward people, dogs, or other animals

We teach our dogs to perform such tasks as pulling wheelchairs, assisting with walking, opening and closing doors, turning light switches on and off, bringing telephone receivers, doing counter exchanges at banks and stores, and retrieving dropped objects. These dogs restore dignity and self-respect to their partners, freeing them from total reliance on other people. They provide a constant source of unconditional love--and they love their work!
