Adopting an IDI Dog
Despite our careful screening process, we cannot guarantee that every dog we accept
into our program will be perfectly suited for life as a service dog. There are so many
variables that come into play--size, strength, work ethic, activity preferences, and so
on--that we simply cannot predict how every dog will turn out. Therefore, if at any time
during the dog’s training our trainers decide--whether for medical, social, or other
reasons--that the dog is not ideally suited to the job, we put that dog up for adoption.
The dogs that are released from IDI’s training program are generally obedient,
well-socialized, and non-aggressive. Because they are exposed to so many environments and
experiences from the time they are pups, they know how to behave in diverse social
situations and make wonderful companions. For that reason, our dogs are in great demand as
pets, and we have a waiting list of families who are interested in them. Because we feel
so attached to and responsible for each dog in our program, we are very careful to ensure
that any dog who leaves IDI is placed with a warm, caring family who will provide proper
care in a secure, loving home. And if for any reason the adoption does not work out, the
family is asked to return the dog to IDI for another placement.
